The Role of Skilled Trades in Climate Protection: A Research Perspective
At the Greentech.LIVE conference in Hamburg, Simon Wehden, PhD student at the Technical University of Berlin, talks about his research into the role of the skilled trades in climate protection and the socio-ecological transformation.
Wehden sees a very large impact that skilled trades have on sustainability and climate communication.
Tailor-Made Solutions vs. Mass Production
In particular, Simon is investigating how the skilled crafts sector offers context-dependent, tailor-made solutions compared to industrial mass production and scientific problem solving.
This is particularly important in the repair and renovation of buildings and in dealing with the specific consequences of climate change, such as in regions affected by natural disasters.
Guilds as Key Actors in Climate Protection
Another topic of his research is the question of how guilds can act as actors in climate protection.
Simon is convinced that these organizations play a key role, as they have direct access to craftsmen who work locally and can therefore have a significant impact on sustainability in the construction industry.
Craftspeople and their guilds are indispensable, particularly with regard to the energy renovation of existing buildings and the repair of structures damaged by climate change.
